What is Reiki?

Energy permeates all living things...

You may know this energy as chi, ki, prana, or even soul.

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words.
Rei -  universal life force, all-knowing, spiritual consciousness
Ki - breath, life force, vital radiant energy

Reiki is...

  • spiritually guided life force energy

  • the energy that connects our higher self with everything around us

  • an ancient healing method that guides energy flow in the body

  • a gentle and safe healing practice that is geared towards removing any energy blocks in our system caused by emotional, mental or physical stress and pain.

Dr. Mikao Usui, Founder of Reiki & 1st Grand Master

Mikao Usui, an 11th generation Zen Buddhist, studied allopathic medicine as a young man.  During a cholera epidemic, he became ill and as he came close to death, he had a spiritual experience that inspired him to study ancient teachings.

Usui joined a Zen monastery and began studying Sanskrit and ancient Sutras. Within his studies, he found references to an form of healing that revealed symbols, formulas, and methods, detailing how to practice this art of healing. To deepen what he learned from the books, Usui decided to meditate to increase his knowledge and expand the teachings into practice.

After climbing up to the top of Mt. Kurama, Usui gathered a stone for each of the 21 days he planned to meditate.  Each day he meditated, prayed and read the Sutras.  With only one stone left, on the last day, he prayed to be shown the light.  A bright light suddenly appeared in the sky and came towards him, entering his 3rd eye chakra.  Usui was knocked unconscious. In this altered state, he saw the same symbols held within the Sutras.

Climbing down the mountain, he had several opportunities to practice what he had learned: a stubbed toe, eating without discomfort after fasting for 21 days, a toothache, and the severe arthritis of the monastery's Abbott.

Usui took Reiki to the Kyoto slums to heal the homeless and help the beggars turn into productive members of society.  He noticed that many of those he treated kept returning.  When asked why they were returning, he was told that 'it was easier to beg'.

His experience in the slums reminded him that it was necessary to heal body, mind, and spirit.  After another period of meditation, Usui received the five Principles of Reiki (see bottom of this page).

How Reiki Works

Reiki promotes balance and restores our power to heal ourselves

We are born with life force energy flowing within our physical bodies through chakras, meridians, or acupuncture points (nadis). This energy nourishes every cell of our body, promoting and supporting a healthy and constant state of balance.

Like any flow of energy, when disrupted, the energy becomes blocked, stagnated, and imbalanced.  What disrupts our energy field?  Negative thoughts, feeling and behaviors, lack of physical self care, mental overload and exhaustion, emotional trauma, or spiritual disconnection.

Reiki focuses the universal life force energy to the places in the body that need it the most; the blocked, stagnated and imbalanced places.  Reiki clears the energy pathways, much like removing a dam in a stream or river, so that your own energy can once again flow freely.

Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and well-being.

A Typical Session

A Reiki session usually lasts 50 minutes

Before the session starts, you will have the opportunity to discuss what your intent is for the session, plus ask any questions about the process.

While remaining fully clothed (except for shoes), you will be asked to lay down on a massage table. Wearing loose-fitting clothing on the day of your appointment is best so that your breathing is not restricted in any way.

The Reiki practitioner places her hands over or on your body at certain key points and/or chakras.  You may feel a light touch, warmth, cooling, tingling, or nothing at all.  You may feel certain emotions come up.  Memories may arise.  All of these are signs of the deep healing process that is underway.

Directly after and in the days following the session, self-care is paramount.  Drinking plenty of water helps to flush the system.

Depending on the issue at hand, more than one Reiki session may be recommended.
